Milk: The Weight Loss Miracle Drink
Ah yes, milk. A good source of calcium, a good source of certain vitamins, and it’s even a good source of protein. But apparently, that’s not all. Milk also happens to be THE miracle weight loss drink.
Apparently.
I’ve been seeing this commercial lately for milk, or more specifically, the web site 2424milk.com. Maybe you’ve seen it? The “2424” stands for “24 ounces of low fat or fat free milk every 24 hours.”
Every commercial states pretty much the same thing their web site states. And, that is that drinking milk, as part of a reduced calorie diet, will make you lose weight.
Hold on. Let me repeat that.
If you reduce the number of calories in your diet… and THEN drink 24 ounces of low fat/fat free milk per day… it will lead to weight loss.
I don’t know who is behind this whole ad campaign, but I’d put my money on it being the same geniuses who brought us Special K Cereal: The Miracle Diet Food. Their whole thing was that eating Special K cereal, as part of a reduced calorie diet, helps your weight loss.
Well, guess what? Eating a McDonald’s cheeseburger, as part of a reduced calorie diet, will make you lose weight.
Banging your head against a wall, as part of a reduced calorie diet, will make you lose weight.
It’s not the milk, it’s not the Special K, it’s not the cheeseburger, and it’s not the head banging… it’s the “reduced calorie diet” part. That’s it. Consume less calories than your body needs and you lose weight.
Every food and drink on the planet could make the exact same claim that milk is making here. Really, McDonald’s would be just plain crazy not to register 2424cheeseburger.com.
And just to clarify, I’m not anti-milk. Milk is far from bad, and if it’s something you enjoy drinking as part of your healthy reduced calorie diet, go for it! But just keep in mind that the reason you are losing fat is because you’re eating less calories (and/or burning more calories), not because you happen to be drinking milk.
So, long story short, a reduced calorie diet is what causes weight loss, not milk. Whether or not you drink milk as part of that diet is completely up to you.

I’m ashamed to say it, but I went through a period where I checked out that site and others like it. And I already KNOW that hormone laden milk is not a great idea.
Update: I have now lost 45 pounds, down from 236 to 191 lbs.
When people ask ‘how did you do it?’ they are always stunned when I say “eat less”. I always thought it had to be this big, complicated thing (why not? it seems so hard for so many people) but eating less and going out dancing twice a week has made all the difference in the world.
I think it may hearken back to your “Calorie Counting is like Weight Watcher’s Points but FREE” article.

im going to cut back on my calories which now that think about it… i ate like a pig when i was pregnant! so hopefully i will be able to lose all this weight. thanks for the facts, its something that will definitely help someone like me who believes all those crazy ads!

special k as replacing two full meals, reduces your calorie intake, and provides you with vitamins. its just a easy way of manageing calories and a diet plan. most americans are to lazy to find out other foods they can also eat. so i think its a good meal substitute. if your only having a bowl of cereal with low fat milk for two meals a day of course you calorie intake will be lower. i say why not, if its at least providing nutrition. its a easy cop out way to lose weight. if it works for people, then they should go for it.

That was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. You mean I can push Bamboo shoots up my nails as part of a reduced calorie diet and still lose weight?

I agree with you that most of these things – like the “special K” diet – are kind of silly. Like you point out, doing anything “as part of a reduced calorie diet” will help you lose weight. However, the claim they are making regarding milk really *is* a little different.
Some studies have suggested that even after you take into account calorie consumption, other diet factors, and exercise – getting in those 2-3 servings of milk per day promotes further weight loss. So the idea is, if you took two groups and put them on identical diets and fitness routines, except one group had 3 servings of milk as part of their diet (still consuming the same amount of calories as the other group) – the milk group would lose more weight. The suggestion is that there is something about the calcium and/or other nutrients contained in milk that help you lose weight.
Now overall, there appears to be mixed findings about this, so I’m not saying it’s definitely right, or that it’s right for the dairy industry to be pushing it so much.
But, I did think it’s important to clarify what the claim means, so we’re in a better position to evaluate it.

Just to add: Here’s a website that describes the actual studies and findings used to support this claim:

If anything the dairy campaign will get more women and men to get their 3 a day of dairy that they need to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Which they have been campaigning the benefits of dairy for your bones forever. Even if it only aids in weightloss in a small way the benefits to your bones is worth it.

It’s easy to get sucked into the commercials that some companies put out there, I’m guilty of buying Special K for the idea of losing weight. It’s true what you say, reduce the calories, reduce the waistline.

Man, that was funny. Milk is toxic! You are lucky if you can even digest the stuff. You would not want to be around me after a big glass of milk… bloating and gas. And your hurting the environment and inocent animals unless your buying 100% natural and organic.
